Simply put: the more organized you are, the more likely you are to scrap successfully. In the past, we’ve discussed where to find scrap, what tools you need, and how to differentiate types of scrap. This blog is all about using your most valuable tool to scrap successfully: your time! Anyone can drive around all day in their truck, scanning for scrap. The smartest scrappers know that there’s a secret rhythm to scrapping, and we’re here to share that secret!
Great times to Scrap Successfully
Find out which day is garbage day in neighborhoods, and hit them the night/day before! Often times folks will leave scrap out by the trashcan, or in the trashcan (though we definitely suggest you ask permission before rooting through someone else’s stuff!) Keep in mind: garbage day isn’t the same in every neighborhood, so if you time it right, you can have a place to grab scrap every day!
On the weekend, check around for garage sales. Often times, you can find people letting stuff go for pennies on the dollar. Sometimes, if it’s old, heavy stuff? They’ll let you have it for free so long as you haul it away. And as you now by now… heavy means profitable!
Move-Out and Move-in Days at Apartments
The beginning and end of the month is a great time to swing by apartment complexes in the area. Many people, when moving out, will choose to leave precious scrap behind… and that’s where you come in! Sometimes it’s even worth your time to camp out by the complex’s dumpster area to grab scrap from folks that would otherwise be thrown into the trash. Move-in days can also yield some scrap (though certainly not as much as move-out days), as things get damaged or don’t fit in people’s new apartments.
Be on the lookout around holiday season! For instance, at the beginning of summer, many people will upgrade their grills, and haul their old one out to the curb. After Christmas, now-obsolete items (TVs, computers, and other electronics particularly) will be trashed. And of course, tons of Christmas lights! This is a golden opportunity for you to make a little extra holiday cash!
Back to School (College)
Same deal as move-out and move-in days above: when students move out, they’ll leave a lot behind… and their trash is your treasure!
